Press Releases Pitt receives millions from government for research, much of it wasted, national research watchdog will charge on Monday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ATTN: Daybook/Monday Assignment Desk PITTSBURGH (April 23, 2006) - A major news conference focusing on
billions of tax dollars wasted on animal research - including nearly $2
million here - will be held at the University of Pittsburgh MONDAY, April
24, at 10 a.m. at the William Pitt Student Union (3959 5th Ave, Room 511).
The executive director a national research watchdog SAEN will speak at
the news briefing, which will include an enlargement of a $183 million
check that Pitt receives for animal research, which ranks the school 14th
in the nation. The news conference is one of dozens of media events taking place this
week across the country as part of World Week for Animals in Laboratories
(WWAIL). In a report being released this week, SAEN reports close to $1 billion
of research tax dollars are being wasted in duplicative and other research
projects, including those at Pitt, says Michael Budkie, executive director
for SAEN. The government also wastes $495,000 million for at least 1,200 grants
for drug and alcohol addiction experiments in rats, mice and macaque
monkeys, he said. -30-
