PITTSBURGH (April 23, 2006) - A major news conference focusing on billions of tax dollars wasted on animal research - including nearly $2 million here - will be held at the University of Pittsburgh MONDAY, April 24, at 10 a.m. at the William Pitt Student Union (3959 5th Ave, Room 511).

The executive director a national research watchdog SAEN will speak at the news briefing, which will include an enlargement of a $183 million check that Pitt receives for animal research, which ranks the school 14th in the nation.

The news conference is one of dozens of media events taking place this week across the country as part of World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL).

In a report being released this week, SAEN reports close to $1 billion of research tax dollars are being wasted in duplicative and other research projects, including those at Pitt, says Michael Budkie, executive director for SAEN.

The government also wastes $495,000 million for at least 1,200 grants for drug and alcohol addiction experiments in rats, mice and macaque monkeys, he said.
