UW scientist hacks off head of primate subject, hides
it from veterinarians; Watchdog group says it will file USDA complaint
against UW URGENT NEWS ADVISORY ATTN: Daybook/Assignment Desk SEATTLE (Oct. 12, 2006) -- A national research watchdog organization
said it is asking for an "immediate investigation" of several University
of Washington researchers -- including one who apparently cut off the
head of one primate and has hid it from campus veterinarians trying to
determine the cause of death. SAEN, a Cincinnati-based non-profit group, will provide details at a
news conference THURSDAY, at 10 am at a UW facility (3010 Wester Ave.)
There will also be a protest opposing bizarre and cruel UW animal
tests Thursday at 4 p.m. At the UW, in addition to the researcher who has refused to let vets
examine the head -- which the researcher removed from the primate's
body(?) at least one other researcher is under investigation because an
animal died "clearly because of negligence," according to SAEN
investigator Michael Budkie, who will attend the Thursday news
conference. SAEN will also announce the filing of a USDA complaint calling for an
investigation of three UW researchers. Earlier this week, SAEN -- on a fact-finding national tour of primate
labs -- exposed a campus cover-up at the University of California, Davis
primate research facility involving the "cooking" to death seven
primates, and animal mistreatment at the UCLA primate laboratories. -30-
