Press Releases National research watchdog demands inspection of 'criminal labs' at UNR and Charles River URGENT NEWS ADVISORY Attention: Daybook/Assignment Desk RENO, NV - The executive director of a national research watchdog
organization has contacted University of Nevada, Reno President Milton
Glick to asking to inspection UNR facilities. UNR health care records
for research animals have also been requested. A similar request has been sent to James Foster, President of Charles
River Laboratories, which has a laboratory in Sparks, NV. “Both UNR and Charles River have a history of major violations of
federal regulations for animal research,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T.,
Executive Director, SAEN. “Since the USDA can’t seem to bring these
criminal labs into line some one else needs to take action.” A national report released this week by SAEN reveals that violations
of federal laws by laboratories have risen more than 90 percent in the
last five years. "The federal government is virtually powerless to regulate criminal
labs and facilities like UNR and Charles River know it," added Budkie.
"Despite statements to the contrary, it is clear that these labs are
much more concerned about the federal funding that animal
experimentation generates than they are about following federal law," he
said. Recently obtained government reports reveal that Charles River
facilities in Nevada and Massachusetts are involved in bioterrorism
experiments involving both nerve gas and anthrax. -30-
