Research Watchdog Organization Releases MD Anderson Chimp Research Report; Continued use of Chimpanzees in Biomedical Research Questioned
For Immediate Release HOUSTON, TX – SAEN, a national research watchdog organization is
releasing a federal report which contains internal information from the MD
Anderson research Center. The NIH report reveals the high cost of housing and caring for
chimpanzees in laboratories as well as the ages of the inmates. 100 chimps
are currently housed at the MD Anderson facility, with 24 being wild
caught animals. Estimated ages for many of the adults approach or exceed
40 years. The second chimpanzee colony funded under the MD Anderson grant holds
73 chimps in Arizona. The single-year cost for housing and caring for 173 chimps is an
astounding $4.38 million dollars, or approximately $25,000 per chimpanzee
per year. The chimps may bring another $4.4 million to MD Anderson in
related funding. “While this facility purports to be part of the national chimpanzee
breeding program, virtually all of the females have had IUDs placed to
prevent their breeding,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T. “It certainly
appears that MD Anderson and the NIH have a very expensive colony of
chimps on their hands which are virtually unused in research. These
chimpanzees should be retired to a sanctuary immediately.” The 60 page government report is available upon request. -30-
