Activists: Slam the Door on Charles River

RENO, NV – Angry Animal Activists have announced a protest for Today, Friday January 8th at 11:30 at the corner of Longley & Maestro, near the Charles River location where the most recent federal violations took place.

“If the staff at Charles River can’t even be trusted to get animals out of the cage before they go through the cage washing system, do you want to trust your life to drugs tested in this facility?” said Tania Tavcar of the Northern Nevada Animal Alliance. “What else have they lied about?”

Protesters have contacted the USDA to demand action against Charles River, and now they want the public to get involved.

A USDA inspection report from June of 2009 reveals an incident during which a primate was left inside a cage which was sent through a cagewasher. Commercial cagewashers are designed to sterilize the enclosures, meaning that this primate was literally boiled alive. This incident occurred even though the cage was supposedly checked 3 times before being put into the washing system.

This incident follows the payment of a $10,000 fine by Charles River Laboratories (CRL) to settle a case arising from a 2008 episode at the CRL facility in Nevada during which a heating malfunction took the lives of 32 primates at the Sparks, NV lab.

A 2007 incident at the CRL lab in Sparks maimed primates so severely that their fingers had to be amputated.

“The negligence at Charles River has taken the lives of many animals and injured many others” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “It is time for meaningful action by government agencies,” he said.
