Federal Investigation Cites SRI lab in Multiple Animal Deaths; Watchdog Group Demands $50,000 Fine

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The United States Department of Agriculture has found the Southern Research Institute guilty of improper animal handling which caused the death of a primate whose head had become caught in a cage. The negligent death of this primate was uncovered by the research watchdog group SAEN, (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW).

However, the federal investigation also uncovered another incident of fatal negligence at SRI. Four ferrets became severely overheated when improperly left in a transport enclosure for an extended period of time, resulting in hyperthermia for all four ferrets. Two of the ferrets died.

With the conclusion of the federal investigation, and the citation of SRI for non-compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, SAEN has again contacted the USDA to demand the “most severe penalty allowable by law.” The federal law allows for a maximum penalty of $10,000 per infraction per animal, potentially totaling $50,000.

“It is clear from these two incidents of negligence that the staff of SRI has an entirely inappropriate and utterly slipshod attitude about the lives of the animals which are in their care,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “Attitudes and carelessness such as this potentially endanger the lives of all the animals at SRI, as well as the American Public.”

All documentation is available upon request.

Negligence at the Southern Research Institute killed a monkey and two ferrets, while subjecting two more ferrets to severe hyperthermia (heat stress). This horrible facility must be held accountable. The USDA must levy the largest fine allowable by law, potentially $50,000.

Please contact the USDA to insist that they take immediate action against this facility’s fatal negligence.
