UCLA research program rocked by federal law violations, and refusal to allow USDA inspectors to investigate; National watchdog holds Friday news conference

LOS ANGELES – A major news conference concerning UCLA's violations of federal law in its multi-million-dollar research program will be held here FRIDAY (July 22) at 10 a.m. at the Westin LAX (Heathrow Room, 5400 W Century Blvd, Los Angeles).

A national research watchdog organization says it will release copies of USDA official warnings to UCLA for violating the Animal Welfare Act, as well as internal inspection reports which generated the federal probe.

The report notes UCLA staff refused to let the federal inspector see
portions of their labs.

Among other information, SAEN, an Ohio nonprofit which monitors the nation's research laboratories for taxpayer waste and cruelty to
animals, said it will make available a statement by Dr. Lawrence Hansen, a Neuroscience professor at UC San Diego, suggesting UCLA methamphetamine research is useless and cruel.

“Millions of animals die in U.S. labs every year, many under barbaric conditions, in questionable research using scarce tax dollars,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.

Documents available upon request.
