Angry activists to protest Mass murder of animals at Lovelace lab Today; Leaked documents reveal heavily fined lab sought exemption from cruelty laws

Albuquerque, NM – Animal activists have announced that a protest will take place at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute Today, February 7, in response to recent revelations of the mass murder of 300 primates and 100 dogs by the staff of the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI).

The protest will be held Today, February 7, at 12:15 PM at 5803 Gibson near the LRRI location at 2425 Ridgecrest Dr. Southeast.

A source connected to recent county meetings to revise anti-cruelty statutes has leaked a sensitive memo to Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! The memo from LRRI spokesperson Chris Merriam-Leith (LRRI’s Director of Business Affairs) expresses LRRI’s desire to be exempted from county anti-cruelty laws.

Merriam-Leith states that LRRI is concerned that the regulations “ . . . will create unjustified opportunities for activist individuals and organizations to engage in nuisance litigation activities that will further lead to both negative publicity and wasted time and resources.”

LRRI seeks to exclude all regulated research facilities from the anti-cruelty laws. Specifically, the lab wants to be relieved of requirements to provide “adequate food” to animals.

According to the communication, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute – which has been hit by heavy fines for animal welfare violations – fraudulently claims: “Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) is a strong supporter of the Animal Welfare Act and we work very hard at maintaining our standards and accreditations.”

“The only way that LRRI supports the Animal Welfare Act is with the fines that the lab pays,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “I’m sure that the recent $21,000 fine supported the AWA by paying for a number of inspections to be performed. LRRI also maintains atrocious standards."

"In March of 2009 LRRI negligence killed a monkey through suffocation. In 2010 LRRI negligence illegally suffocated one dog and exsanguinated another. In 2011 LRRI callousness killed 400 animals. Very consistent standards – they unnecessarily slaughter animals every year,” Budkie said.

The leaked documents are available from SAEN.
