Government Reports Document UNLV Guilty of Negligence in Deaths; Watchdog Complaint Demands $150,000 in Penalties Against Facility

LAS VEGAS, NV   – Multiple acts of negligence which led to death and torture by staff at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas is being reported by a national research watchdog organization today.

SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW) said it has filed an Official Complaint with federal regulatory agencies against UNLV for multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act, and is demanding  the USDA levy the largest penalty allowable under the law against UNLV: $150,000 ($10,000 per infraction).

SAEN has released a shocking two-page USDA inspection report, dated Feb. 14, 2013,  which reveals multiple serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act where two animals died following failures by UNLV staff.

According to the USDA report animals were denied pain relief follow surgical procedures, another unapproved drug was administered, and UNLV staff also failed to administer post-operative antibiotics.

SAEN noted that two animals were also denied veterinary care despite exhibiting clear signs of distress.  The statements quoted in the inspection report from UNLV records clearly describe animals who are seriously ill and suffering:  "Heavy abdominal breathing, lethargic", and "Heavy labor breathing."  The next record entries for these animals are: "Found dead," and "Pig died in her pen."

"Multiple clear incidents of negligence at UNLV has killed animals and caused real suffering to others," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.  "This lab deserves the most severe penalty that the law allows."

The USDA report and SAEN's Official Complaint are available upon request from SAEN.
