EUROPEAN UNION THREATENS BAN
ON P&G PRODUCTS IF ANIMAL TESTED;
P&G TARGETED SATURDAY FOR PROTEST

CINCINNATI Procter & Gamble which could soon see its products banned in all of Europe by the European Union (EU) will be the target of a major rally here Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at Fountain Square as part of "Global Day of Action Against P&G."

Demonstrations focusing on the company's decision to continue testing cosmetics and other products on animals will be held Saturday around the world.

In Cincinnati, the Saturday rally continues to 1 p.m., following by a march to "Taste of Cincinnati," and a protest outside P&G's HCRC (Health Care Research Center) in Mason at 5 p.m., according to Cincinnati Animal Defense.

Michael Budkie, executive director for Cincinnati-based SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation Now) and the designer of the national campaign a decade ago to pressure P&G to stop testing products on animals, will be keynote speaker at Saturday's rally.

"Prove to me that rats & mice aren't being force-fed Tide. Prove to me that rabbits don't have Comet sprayed into their eyes. Show me that Mr. Clean isn't being used to poison animals," said Mr. Budkie.

And, on Friday (5/24/02), a Reuters News Service story said that a key EU parliament committee had voted to ban the sale of new cosmetics tested on animals within five years and the ban would include U.S. companies such as Procter & Gamble.
