WTC hero cares about all creatures Published in THE JOURNAL NEWS, Oct. 29, 2001: My good friend Andy Scagnelli was one of the brave people who risked
their own lives to save victims of the attack on the World Trade Center. On
Sept. 11, Andy, who is an officer in Bronx Supreme Court, was just three
blocks away when the first blast occurred. He paused only long enough to
call his wife and tell her that he was fine, then he raced down the street
to help. Andy pulled four injured people from the rubble and carried or
dragged them to safety just before the buildings collapsed. My friend is a hero, but even though I'm proud, I'm not surprised. He cares deeply about other beings, no matter how insignificant they may
seem to others. Once, when a kitten became trapped in the engine of a car,
he dismantled the shock absorber rather than harm the tiny animal. He's not
too busy to stop and share a bit of food with birds and squirrels. And he's
a vegan - he will not dine on the broken bodies of animals who suffered and
died unnecessarily. Andy represents the best America has to offer, a combination of strength,
courage, compassion, action and nonviolence. He is an example to us all. Kiley Blackman Yonkers Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
