Animal lover losing patience

Published in THE JOURNAL NEWS 5/10 :

(Original publication: May 10, 2005)

Rye has lost patience with local deer (May 4 story), and apparently some residents are so distraught over the state of their gardens, due to deer grazing, that they want to do everything from opening their land to bowhunters to rounding the animals up and shooting them in large numbers.

These garden enthusiasts seemed to have missed the day in school when they taught ethics.

Having myself encountered deer in many parts of Westchester, and in some cases getting close enough to touch young fawns, I cannot understand the sort of heartlessness it would take to want to harm and kill these beautiful and gentle creatures the original "residents" of Westchester. The deer population "problem" does not even approach the human population problem, and we have snatched every bit of wild land from these animals for our homes, gardens, strip malls, parking lots and so on.

Rye residents should know that those of us with compassion for all beings are losing patience with their blind sense of entitlement and mindless callousness.
