Letters BAN HORSERACING Published in the 'letters' section of AM NEW YORK, 5/13: Re "Don't cry for Smarty Jones": Yeah, Smarty Jones is living the good
life, as your article alludes to - while he can still turn a profit as a
'breeder.' Racehorses are victims of a multibillion- dollar industry rife
with drug abuse, injuries, and race fixing. Don't tell the public the animals are 'cherished' beyond their productive
years - it's a business, figure it out. When no longer useful they usually go to auction - a heartbreaking
experience for these sentient, intelligent beings. They are disposable
'property.' Smarty Jones, the beautiful animal who was beaten unmercifully by the
jockey during the race, has a good life now? Race horses are overbred,
forced to run before their bones are mature, and drugged to mask injuries -
the entire sad 'sport' should be banned. Kiley Blackman Yonkers Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
