Tuckahoe, N.Y.: Re “Florida man uses small shark to catch large shark”
(Sept. 12):
Why is the man’s activity, which involves human trickery that
causes painful death, merely called a “fishing excursion” — but the large
shark having a perfectly normal meal is called an “attack”?
Language is powerful: We make animal behavior sound “wild” to justify our
cruelty towards them. Non-human animals are sentient and intelligent; it is
time to afford them the same respectful language human animals demand.
