Horse and carriage rides will resume after accident

December 14, 2007 Brampton, Ontario, Canada -

The horse-drawn carriage rides in the downtown core are back on this weekend. Emergency repairs fixed damage done in a hit-and-run collision last Friday, according to the Brampton Downtown Development Corporation (BDDC).

The BDDC sponsors the rides every Friday and Saturday evening, 6 to 10 p.m. They will be extended to daily rides-- 1 to 5 p.m.-- starting Sunday (Dec. 23), and the daily rides will continue through Jan. 4, except Dec. 25 and Dec. 31.

The rides were de-railed when the two carriages were rear-ended on Main Street at Brickyard Way last Friday. They were far north of the downtown core, on their way to the Four Corners to start their shift when they were hit. There was one driver in each carriage. The carriage in the rear was hit, throwing the 54-year-old owner onto the road and knocking down the horse, which slid under the carriage in front. It is not known if the horse will be able to work again.

The owner suffered a broken thumb and deep bruising to his knees, while the horse suffered cuts.

Peel police are looking for a dirty pickup truck in the fail-to-remain collision that happened at 5:20 p.m.

The pickup truck left t he scene, heading south on Main, then turned around at Williams Parkway and was last seen heading north on Main.

There is no description of the driver or how many people were in the pickup, according to police. The truck was described as dirty, two-toned and "lowered" with a possible colour of white, blue or silver. The license plate may begin with the numbers 532 and end with the letters BD.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Collision Bureau at 905-453-3311, ext. 3710.

The rides cost $10 for a family of four and begin and end on Wellington Street across from Gage Park.
