Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest
February 2014
Annie - a very happy resident at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest
Pharmaceutical company Merck & Co announced last week that they will no longer use chimpanzees to test their drugs. Merck joins a growing list of private companies who have stopped or pledged not to use chimpanzees in biomedical testing.
This is yet another sign that the use of chimpanzees for biomedical research is slowly coming to an end in the United States.
Many questions remain about the future of chimpanzees owned by both private companies and the federal government.
As a part of the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, we are
working to ensure that the last remaining chimpanzees in biomedical testing
receive a proper sanctuary retirement. They deserve no less.
