The danger to many humans who are allergic to certain foods is guaranteed, because no one will know what they are eating. For example, say someone is deathly allergic to peanuts. A GMO (genetically modified organism)\u00a0may have a gene from a peanut in them.<\/p>\n

The allergic person could get a reaction from eating ANYTHING that contained the peanut gene. They wouldn’t even know what caused it – because there are no labeling laws about GMOs. Pesticides are now going to be INSIDE the food you eat!<\/p>\n

Why we can\u2019t ignore the consequences:
\nTime will tell the ultimate consequences of GMO crops. However, even now we know there will be very serious problems with their use.<\/p>\n

One of those problems is associated with the pesticides some of these crops generate. When a farmer plants GMO crops, they don\u2019t have to use as much bug killer. That saves them money. You can see why they are interested in this.<\/p>\n

But the reason they don\u2019t have to use the bug killer so much is that the plants make their own pesticides! Think about it. The food you eat has built-in pesticide. Do you really want to eat that?<\/p>\n

But aside from how you feel about eating built-in bug spray, there are at least two more problems with this practice.<\/p>\n

First, over time the insects become immune to the internal and external pesticides. It stops affecting them. And new generations of bugs can\u2019t be controlled this way. They become the insect equivalent of super bugs.<\/p>\n

That means farmers have to start using more bug spray. And they have to use stronger bug spray besides. There goes their money savings.<\/p>\n

The second unintended consequence of this pesticide problem is even more serious. At the same time it is more subtle.<\/p>\n

The problem:
\nBees are dying. Why is this a big deal? The short answer is that bees are responsible for 1\/3 of our food supply. They help pollinate the crops that feed us. Imagine 1\/3 less food available. Not a pretty picture.<\/p>\n

Honey bees are the angels of agriculture, but they\u2019re disappearing at a startling rate in a mysterious phenomenon dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).<\/p>\n

One of every three bites of food you eat depends on the honey bee. They pollinate at least 130 different crops in the U.S. alone, including fruits, vegetables and tree nuts. Without honey bees, farmers would have to resort to pollinating their crops by hand.<\/p>\n

According to a recent British report, replacing the pollination of food crops that bees do for free with hand pollination would cost the UK \u00a31.8 billion per year.<\/p>\n

Scientists have investigated a number of factors to help explain CCD and have offered a variety of explanations. The primary theory seems to be that Colony Collapse Disorder is caused by a variety of imbalances in the environment, secondary to current agricultural and industrial practices.<\/p>\n
