Genesis 4:2 – Bible Commentary<\/strong>
\nAnd again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.<\/p>\n

Try to picture yourself in such a family. There are only four people, and possibly some other unmentioned children, in the entire world. This family is all alone except for God and the animals. They can make something wonderful of their lives, or they can cause disaster. It all depends upon whether or not each one considers himself or herself accountable to anyone but himself or herself.<\/p>\n

This passage of Scripture (Genesis 4:2) has not told us the time span between the birth of Cain and the birth of Abel. However, we are told what they became when they were older. Why? Most likely because it has a bearing upon what we are told next.<\/p>\n

We do know that there was no death in Eden. Additionally, there is no evidence of there being any pain or suffering before Eve\u2019s and Adam\u2019s disobedience to God. We also know from passages such as Revelation 21:4 that there is no pain suffering or death in heaven.<\/p>\n

So, on the surface, it appears that Cain is doing what God desires, and Abel was not. But then we are left with the question: Where and when did the idea and need to keep flocks come from? God\u2019s command in Genesis 1:29-30 was that humans and animals were to only eat plant foods. And, this seems like only a relatively short time after they were expelled from Eden.<\/p>\n

thus far in these Genesis 4:1 and 4:2 verses everything seems to be okay, but the corruption is still present.<\/p>\n
