Forgiveness Without Sacrifice \u2013 Part 09<\/h2>\n

The part of this study involves the story of an immoral or sinful woman who came and washed the feet of\u00a0 Jesus with her tears, dried them with her hair, and anointed them with perfume\u00a0 (Luke 7:36-50).\u00a0 John tells a similar story in 12:1-8 about Mary the sister\u00a0 of Martha and Lazarus, but without the key phrase of this discussion (Luke 7:48, “Your sins\u00a0 have been forgiven.”\u00a0 Let’s look at Luke 7:47-50.<\/p>\n

47 “For this reason I say to\u00a0 you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he\u00a0 who is forgiven little, loves little.”<\/p>\n

48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”<\/p>\n

49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves,\u00a0 “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”<\/p>\n

50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

This\u00a0 is another Biblical\u00a0 example that forgiveness is based solely upon the person’s faith and repentant\u00a0 heart.\u00a0 There was no offering of an animal sacrifice.\u00a0 There was no\u00a0 atoning blood.\u00a0 Jesus had not been crucified as the final sacrifice. This was still under the Hebrew Law.\u00a0\u00a0 This forgiveness was offered as a gift of God’s grace.<\/p>\n

This is also another Biblical\u00a0 example that proves that the entire animal sacrificial system was a concession, at best,\u00a0 from God and not a requirement of the Law.\u00a0 Jesus, who was sinless, would\u00a0 not have broken His Father’s Law.\u00a0 As He said in Matthew 5:17, He came to\u00a0 fulfill the Law.<\/p>\n

Forgiveness is a gift of God’s\u00a0 grace.\u00a0 We cannot “buy” it with the blood of an innocent animal, or even\u00a0 the precious blood of Jesus.\u00a0 Salvation and forgiveness come as a result of\u00a0 our faith in God and our repentant heart and soul.<\/p>\n

We hope that this little\u00a0 series will provoke some discussion, shake an ivory tower or two, and rattle the\u00a0 cages in which many hierarchical clergy have placed themselves.<\/p>\n
