Challenging Church Compassion \u2013 11: St. Francis Church<\/h2>\n

We received an email from Jenny Moxham (Australia), who gets just as upset as we do about the lack of true compassion in the churches. She attached an article she wrote about it and had published in the Hamilton Press (New Zealand). She wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does St Francis Church Hillcrest fail to see the incongruity of following an animal blessing service with a sausage sizzle consisting of the bodies of pitiful animals who would have endured a lifetime of suffering and abuse in a factory farm? (Hamilton Press \u2018\u2018Pets invited for church blessing\u2019\u2019, September 29, 2010).<\/p>\n

Even more ludicrous, we\u2019re told that the proceeds raised from selling their barbecued bodies will go to animal caring organisations! Isn\u2019t this whole thing totally nonsensical?<\/p>\n

Surely the feast of Saint Francis \u2013 World Animal Day \u2013 is the one day of the year when churches should take the opportunity to condemn the abuse of so many of God\u2019s gentle creatures in factory farms.<\/p>\n

Blessing pampered pets while simultaneously contributing to the merciless abuse of other less fortunate animals turns this whole event into a great big farce.\u201d<\/p>\n

These are the kinds of things that chase away people who truly care about animals and don\u2019t eat them.<\/p>\n

This is also another example of how the hardness of heart in this and other churches makes them indifferent to the suffering of all animals, and serves as blasphemy against the true ministry of Jesus Christ and the heavenly will of God.<\/p>\n

We are called to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48), to be peacemaking children of God (Matthew 5:9) who are to free creation from its present corruption (Romans 8:18-23), so that there is no longer any pain or death. We are NOT to be like St. Francis Church.<\/p>\n
