We all need to tell the world that in our opinion there is no such thing as humane slaughter, because of the repeated cited and uncited violations of not properly stunning animals, and that institutionalized animal cruelty is rampant in the world.<\/p>\n

On 29 February 2012, the Croghan Meat Market, Inc. slaughterhouse in Croghan, New York was inspected by the USDA\u2019s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and was cited for not properly stunning the animals. The report stated:<\/p>\n

Citation: At approximately 8:45am this morning, I witnessed the following non-compliance. While waiting behind a wall while a cow was going to be shot in the knockbox, there were two gunshots approximately 4 or 5 seconds apart. I ([redacted] SPHV) had attempted to move to a window in the door leading to the slaughter room after the first shot. I was doing this to confirm that the first shot had been successful in rendering the cow unconscious. Mr.____ requested that I remain behind the wall because they were going to administer a second gunshot. The second gunshot occurred during this conversation. I immediately observed the cow after the second gunshot and she was completely unconscious. I later inspected the skull and saw that both shots had penetrated and were administered in the correct stunning\/shooting location. I spoke to Mr.____ and explained that under Federal regulations, an animal is required to be rendered insensible\/unconscious after a single shot, and that IPP including inspectors and veterinarians need to be able to verify that. By not being allowed to witness the cow after the first shot had been administered, I was unable to determine if this regulation had been met. As the second shot took place immediately, and I was able to determine that the cow was unconscious immediately after the second shot, I did not need to take any regulatory control action. I explained to Mr. that in the future we need to be able to verify insensibility with a single gunshot or captive bolt stun.<\/p>\n

This is a perfect example of how the government isn\u2019t doing a proper job according to their own regulations.<\/p>\n

It is also a perfect example why we all should be vegan, for it is the only sure way of preventing institutionalized animal cruelty at facilities like Croghan Meat Market, Inc., and others around the world.<\/p>\n
