SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - A Chicopee man was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after he was shot while hunting by another hunter in South Hadley.

Massachusetts Environmental Police spokesperson Katie Gronendyke told 22News they received a report of the shooting involving a 37-year-old man just before 9:30 a.m.

South Hadley Police Chief Steve Parentella confirmed with 22News his department received a call from the Holyoke Medical Center at 8:37 a.m. about a hunter who had been shot in the back near Ferry Street.

Chief Parentella explained that the shooting was apparently accidental by another hunter. The victim was taken to the Holyoke Medical Center by other hunters and then transferred to Baystate Medical's Trauma center. He is expected to survive.

Chief Parentella added that a "birdshot" fired from a shotgun used by another hunter, caused the injuries. "It is Turkey season," the police chief said.

The accidental shooting incident is being handled by the Massachusetts Environmental Police, who investigate hunting accidents.

No arrests have been made.
