National Organic Standards Act:
Good News and Bad News
By: Gerry Coffey

THE GOOD NEWS IS:

The National Organic Standards Act passed in no small part 7 years ago by our own Mad Cow Disease Expert, Howard Lyman--when he was a Capital Hill Lobbyist for farmers—has finally been proposed by Congress and the public has about 80 days left to register opinions before ratification.

THE BAD NEWS IS:

If people like you and I don’t speak up and let congressional representatives know this lengthy proposal is a mockery as it now stands, authentic Organic food sources will be less reliable than they are now.

Example: as proposed, the organic standards act will allow the "organic" label to be applied to:

As an editorial in the MIAMI HERALD points out: "Simple, strict standards and clear, honest labels is all that consumers asked of the USDA, and it’s all that they need."

People who want food free from herbicides, fertilizers, & pesticides that mimic HORMONES & cause everything from PREMATURE PUBERTY TO DEADLY DISEASES are urged to immediately register complaints to Congress via:

  1. HAND-WRITTEN LETTER (The Best!)
  2. FAX or
  3. PHONE CALL

REMEMBER, IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO???

Note: Ask the Press to print a copy of the proposal so all might see.

Alabama legislators to contact include:

Note: Some vegetarians think they are immune to e-coli, Mad Cow Disease and the Bird Flu because they consume no meat or dairy products. Unfortunately, the e-coli bacteria (that killed 4 people and hospitalized many others who consumed McDonald’s hamburgers & precipitated a recall of 25 million TONS of hamburger: which, incidentally, was recycled at other hamburger outlets and for pet food) has also been found in fruit and vegetables, and caused serious and in some cases deadly problems. The reason: food handlers often come in contact with human or other animal-borne feces and contaminate the food they handle regardless if it’s animal or vegetable.

The truth is, we all sink or swim together because the contamination tends to overlap. However, plant food eaters DO have an advantage, particularly those who consume fresh, uncooked food. If it feels, smells or appears to be spoiled, take no chances and don’t consume it.

Processed foods and eating out pre-empt these signals, because it’s difficult to discern until it’s too late what passes for food fit for human consumption. Once it is cooked, the effects are unobservable, but the germs are not destroyed. --gc

FREEDOM OF SPEECH CHALLENGED: On a related note:, Howard Lyman and TV Talk Show Mogul, Oprah Winfrey were tied up more than a year by a law suit that took them to court in Amarillo, Texas. Irate Texas cattle ranchers sued them for $25 million dollars for allegedly breaking the law by "disparaging American products."
