ADVICE

Broccoli - Broccoli Juice

I was wondering what enzyme or other is in broccoli or broccoli juice. I  juiced a small amount of broccoli juice last year with carrots and had an instant reaction in my mouth.

My lips got tiny blisters on them and my mouth was tingling and numb. (I have never had a problem with carrots). Yesterday I had raw broccoli salad and within an hour the inside of my mouth became bright red and slightly numb. Have you heard of anything like this?

Dear K.C.:

I have not heard of this type reaction re: broccoli, however I suspect it might be the pesticides used on the broccoli, not the vegetable itself. I have heard broccoli gets heavy doses of pesticides, unfortunately.

I have had a similar effect, however, with cantaloupes. My mouth and lips often burn after I consume them. Probably due to the same thing.

Also, much of our food is genetically engineered now and as there are no laws requiring the labeling of such, the consuming public is ignorant of these risks.

I was recently arrested for campaigning against g.e. foods.
