Answer from Gerry:

Hi, Cynthia:

A recently deceased mentor friend of mine said her dogs were such consciencious vegans they "refused" to eat what she put in front of them unless it was FRESH: Broccoli, Carrots, Romaine Lettuce, Tomotoes, etc.

When we kept our daughter's twin toy collies a few years ago, they were only about 3 months old and already lethargic. As it turned out they had worms and it drained all their energy.

We kept them in the garage and fasted them on distilled water only for about 3 days, then fed them carrot pulp (left over from making carrot juice), chopped greens and brown rice.

They thrived on it. Where before they could barely make a walk around the block, and I would have to nearly drag them, they were now racing eagerly and playing with each other and having a ball. I also taught them to relieve themselves across the railroad tracks and not in our yard.

To make their coats nice and shiny I also recommended sprinkling fortified flax seed powder over their food. You can order this in 2lb. boxes by calling 1-800-EAT-FLAX. (If that's incorrect let me know).

I usually made up a large batch of brown rice (white rice is depleted of nutrients as I'm sure you're aware) once or twice a week and then mixed the fresh "stufff" in just before feeding them.

Don't worry if the dogs don't eat what you put in front of them. Like people, they'll eat when they get hungry enough, and changing their diets, minus all the chemicals and food additives and flavoring, might not be to their liking at first.

You might wish to put it out for about an hour and if they don't eat it remove it. They'll soon get used to eating when you put it in front of them.

Side benefits are no more fleas and ticks which thrive on the odors emanating from the dog's pores. Also nicer, cleaner breath, clear eyes and happy pets;-)

Hope this helps.

Gerry

ps: I also sent a request for info to other vegan friends and this is their response: (And if you haven't yet checked out their webite, I'm sure you'll enjoy it;-)

Answer from Frank L. Hoffman

Dear Gerry:

Dogs are very easy to put on a vegan diet.

As an example our companion dog loved almost everything we ate. We would also fix her rice or pasta (rice is healthier) mixed with beans and/or veggies with tomato sauce. We gave her raw carrots, which she would hold between her front paws and munch on. Her absolute favorite snack was a whole wheat peanut butter sandwich. She also liked her food spiced up a little.

We also gave her a little Vegedog vitamins which we got from Harbingers of a New Age. They also have some recipe ideas and I believe they also have a book about vegetarian dogs and cats. 1-800-884-6262 or http://www.montanasky.net/vegepet

We hope this helps.

In the Love of the Lord,
Frank
