BEREFT

the goldfinch nest of prior years
collapsed; the woven walls cascade
in silvered sheen of thistledown

wpe4CA.jpg (36384 bytes)in early spring, along the trail
the resident male scattered ‘round
his brilliant joy in feathered song

but someone thought to "clean" it up
the tangled thicket, where once were cupped
and hid their tender oval hopes

the voracious chopper’s disregard
of life snagged whole trees,
heaped thick with fragrant honeysuckled vines

now a gaping hole leads easily
to the grassy knoll overlooking
the thimble-island’ sea

and no one thinks of the bereft
lone tree no longer amphitheater
of high-pitched reverie
