CREATURED
CONNECTION
poetry
the goldfinch nest of prior yearsBEREFT
in early spring, along the trail
the resident male scattered round
his brilliant joy in feathered song
but someone thought to "clean" it up
the tangled thicket, where once were cupped
and hid their tender oval hopesthe voracious choppers disregard
of life snagged whole trees,
heaped thick with fragrant honeysuckled vinesnow a gaping hole leads easily
to the grassy knoll overlooking
the thimble-island seaand no one thinks of the bereft
lone tree no longer amphitheater
of high-pitched reverie- Sue Holloway
