Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA now donates $16/hr. for tabling and $25/hr. for up to 3 hours for leafleting to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. Contact Lorena at [email protected] if you can help.

3. Addressing Rivalries Grounded in Human Sexuality

In previous essays, I have maintained that human sexual desires, combined with our desire for self-esteem, make it difficult to avoid the rivalries and conflicts that undermine what Martin Luther King, Jr. called the “Beloved Community” and what I think Jesus had in mind when he described the “Kingdom of God.” Because these conflicts threaten to tear communities apart, humans since the dawn of human civilization have alleviated these tensions through the scapegoating process. One or more individuals have been unjustly blamed for the conflicts, and their ostracism or expulsion from the community has restored peace. Can we resolve these conflicts without resorting to scapegoating?

Though Jesus said that we “must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48), we are flawed creatures who almost invariably succumb to some of our desires. I am pessimistic about our ability to generate the perfect Kingdom of God. I think the best we can do is to pursue of the Kingdom of God in our own hearts and in our communities.

Toward that end, I propose two guiding principles, which should never be in conflict – compassion and truth. In the next two essays, I will discuss how these principles apply to our relationships with humans and nonhumans, and then I will discuss how to deal with situations in which these two principles might appear to conflict.

Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.
