From the 'Shopping Around' section in The Universe dated 25 July, 1986:
A new word has entered the English language to describe the
fast-growing sector of the population which is partly, but not quite,
vegetarian "Demi-Veg".
According to the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Information Bureau, more
than three million people in this country have already moved towards a
semi-vegetarian lifestyle by cutting out red meats and food high in
salt, sugar and fat, and replacing them with fruit and vegetables, low
fat dairy products, eggs, fish, poultry, wholemeal bread, pasta and
rice.
The major advantage of a demi-veg lifestyle is that it is healthy,
but it is also easy and inexpensive, especially if you take advantage of
fruit and vegetables in season.
The basic rule is to use vegetables as the main item of a meal, with
the protein as the accompaniment, instead of the other way round.
