Quite a few turkeys, chicken and geese whose destination appeared to
be the oven, have been reprieved. The warden of Wingshaven, an
aptly-named bird sanctuary in Sussex, says that in the summer many
people buy birds to fatten up for the Christmas table. When the day of
doom draws near, they simply cannot bring themselves to slaughter
creatures to which they have become quite attached, but, unable to
foster them themselves they offer them to sanctuaries.
This year Wingshaven has accepted the record number of 80 birds, who
are now facing a happy new life as pets at schools and children's homes.
Reproduced with thanks.
