Animal Aid 'Churches campaign' (1981)

The following letter was sent to Church leaders whilst Animal Aid members were encouraged to submit it to local church representatives with a special campaign leaflet:

Dear....

Many people are becoming increasingly concerned about the appalling treatment of animals in laboratories in Britain today. Every year over 500,000 animals are poisoned to death in the infamous LD50 test to try and assess the toxic properties of new cosmetics, hair colouring agents, weed killers, fly-sprays, oven-sprays, paints, drugs etc. Apart from the fact that these tests are exceedingly cruel, scientists themselves are questioning the validity of the results obtained.

We are therefore writing to request a meeting with you to discuss the church's attitude regarding these issues and whether some formal protests could be made to governments and companies concerned, asking that funds should be made available to help research into humane, non-animal alternative tests. We feel that the church has a role to play in bringing it to the attention of the parties concerned that animals are God's creatures and not just laboratory tools.

We look forward to a reply at your earliest convenience,

Yours Sincerely,
