Although I, a Church of England clergyman, have been a vegetarian for over a quarter of a century and a vegan for about two years, I have never found the holy communion service revolting when, calling them respectively His body and blood. Jesus at His last supper handed round the bread and wine, He was speaking and acting parabolically. What He meant was that, by imbibing His teaching, His followers must themselves become Christ's. Remember that Tertullian, the early Christian writer, who perhaps lived between 160 and 240, was of the opinion that Jesus was both vegetarian and teetotal. T.
