I was interested in Agnetta Sutton's article 'Artificial organs are now the safer option' (February 9) With advances in technology there should be less need for humans to use animals in ways which cause them distress. For instance, until now surgeons have practised surgery on animals, but it was reported recently that there is now a computerised human dummy which breathes, has blood pressure and a heart-beat and other functions. Laboratory experiments on live animals are unreliable because 1 in 20 beds is occupied by people suffering side-effects to medical drugs which were "safely" tested on animals first. The Bible instructs us to be good stewards of God's creation and with this should come a duty of care to the creatures that God created. A. Well Catholic Times (2/3/97) Reproduced with thanks.
