The Fellowship of Life |
From The Universe dated 15 August 1986: Here, a new alliance between the five world religions and
international environmentalists will be forged through a series of
dramatic events including pilgrimages through Umbria's beautiful
countryside, a great interfaith ceremony, a Conservation Conference
chaired by Prince Philip, and a major festival of music, drama and
dance, drawing upon religious and cultural art forms from around the
world. However, what happens at Assisi September 23-29 is only the first
step. Of more fundamental importance is the emergence of long-term
follow-up programmes inspired by the event, which will develop the
themes raised. We are delighted that both the Archbishop of Canterbury
and Cardinal Hume will be sending a letter of support. We would like to extend an invitation to all those who are able to
join us in Assisi to remember us in their prayers at this time. We are
also jointly arranging a special service to take place at St James'
church, Piccadilly at 11am on Sunday 21 September. One very powerful example of what the events at Assisi are about is
the Canticle of the Creatures Community Project. This musical work,
based on the final prayer/poem of St Francis, is a jazz oratorio
composed by a Franciscan Brother and performed in dance and song by
members of the Craigmillar community in Edinburgh. It is a joyful
celebration of nature which captures the simplicity of St Francis and
his message. Martin Palmer The Universe (15/8/86) Reproduced with thanks Return to Letters |
