Austria Passes Anti-Cruelty Law

Good news from Austria. Lawmakers, voted unanimously to enact an anti-cruelty law, one of Europe's harshest, will ban pet owners from cropping dogs' ears or tails, force farmers to uncage their chickens, and ensure that puppies and kittens no longer swelter in pet shop windows. It makes it a crime to bind cattle tightly with ropes also. Includes fines of $2,420, and in cases of extreme cruelty could be fined up to $18,160 and have their animals seized. Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel said Austria was sending a stern message to the rest of Europe and the world about respecting animals.

The new law also outlaws the use of lions and other wild animals in circuses and makes it illegal to restrain dogs with chains, choke collars, or "invisible fences" that administer mild electric shocks.

Four Paws (an Austrian animal rights organization) says that it's a step in the right direction. However it won't do enough to improve conditions for cattle and pigs. The Austrian Farm Federation opposed the law, arguing that it will increase costs for farmers and could lead to more imports.

Wouldn't it be nice if our government did something compassionate?

IFAW has a petition going around asking for signatures for a Kerry/Bush debate on the environment/animals.

The article was in today's news The Record.

God's Creatures Ministry is committed to spreading God's compassion to all He has made based on The Scriptures. Although we are a Christian Ministry, we encourage all to have their own animal welfare committee in their community. We extend our resources to those who would like to learn more or begin their own God's Creatures Ministry as an extension of us. God created us to have a vegetarian diet and commissioned us to protect His animals. Instead, we have exploited them for our entertainment, fashion, appetite and useless, torturous research. These creatures have the right to live as they were created to live. Because we live IN this world, but are not OF this world, we strive to bring God's mercy and justice to all. We live in God's Kingdom now where Jesus, The Sacrificial Lamb, The Prince of Peace, The Lion of Judah reigns. We look forward to that day when all of creation will be 'set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God' (Romans 8:21) where a little child will lead and guide God's creatures (see Isaiah 11:5-9).
