October - A Month for Compassion

By: Jan Fredericks, MA, LPC
Wayne, NJ

October is known for Bratwurst at Octoberfests, Halloween candy and hunting. Little is known that October is National Vegetarian Month and National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. The 2nd week of October is National Squirrel Awareness Week and National Wildlife Week, and even National School Lunch Week. The 2nd of October is Gandhi's Birthday (who promoted non-violence for animals), and the 4th is the Feast Day for St. Francis when animals are blessed. The 12th of October is National World Egg Day and the 26th is National Mule Day (didn't one have the honor of transporting Jesus?).

All of these are noteworthy. We are bombarded with egg and dairy commercials lately. Animal products mostly come from animals that live out their lives in factories. Chicken's beaks are sliced off and their feet tangle in the wire flooring. Chickens that hatch are thrown on live piles of other chicks or put on a conveyor belt. Billions of chickens suffer greatly for our 'health' (by the way, the Avian Flu may be on it's way). We also believe the lies of the 'Animal Care Certified' seal which still allows birds to live crammed in small cages, have parts of their beaks sliced off to avoid pecking each other and allows starving the birds for a week to lose 30% of their body weight so they have another cycle of egg laying. Chickens are then often thrown into trucks and suffer with broken legs and wings.

Cows' calves are taken away which they grieve and look for. They even try to hide them from the 'farmers'.

Male calves are often chained so they can't move to produce the cruel product of veal. The females are raised apart from their mother to produce more milk. It's an endless cycle and milk is even bad for us!

Pigs are likewise treated as machinery. They live in a stall that is only big enough for them. They suffer their whole lives.

The Creator of these animals, put them in our care to protect and care for. Let October remind us throughout the year that animals matter to God. Cruelty free food served in our schools and churches will teach God's compassion for animals which is a subject we don't hear much about.

God's Creatures Ministry is committed to spreading God's compassion to all He has made based on The Scriptures. Although we are a Christian Ministry, we encourage all to have their own animal welfare committee in their community. We extend our resources to those who would like to learn more or begin their own God's Creatures Ministry as an extension of us. God created us to have a vegetarian diet and commissioned us to protect His animals. Instead, we have exploited them for our entertainment, fashion, appetite and useless, torturous research. These creatures have the right to live as they were created to live. Because we live IN this world, but are not OF this world, we strive to bring God's mercy and justice to all. We live in God's Kingdom now where Jesus, The Sacrificial Lamb, The Prince of Peace, The Lion of Judah reigns. We look forward to that day when all of creation will be 'set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God' (Romans 8:21) where a little child will lead and guide God's creatures (see Isaiah 11:5-9).
