"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the same
time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel
called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.
The following letter was written to Senator Charles E. Schumer. A similar letter was also sent to Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand.
2 March 2009
The Honorable Charles E. Schumer
313 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Schumer:
We urge you to investigate the large amount of federal dollars wasted on unnecessary animal research that is driven by an “old boys’ network” in the National Institute of Health’s peer review system that uses outdated animal research methods at the expense of innovative and modern human-centered methodologies. The result is billions of dollars wasted and millions of animal lives lost.
As one example, the federal government is currently spending at least $47 million on nicotine/tobacco-related animal experiments which have continued for decades, even as the lethal effects of smoking are well-known. Yet smoking prevention/cessation programs are under-funded.
Please address the many such areas of government waste.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Frank L. Hoffman
