Environmentalist Anthony Marr was in the Okanagan recently as part of a
six-week campaign that will take him throughout BC handing out cards that
he hopes hunting foes will mail to Premier Glen Clark
Estimates of the number of Grizzlies in BC vary. Marr says independent
biologists put the figure at 4,000-7,000, which on the high side was the
governments estimate in 1979.
In
1980, the government was charged with over-hunting, (but instead of
lowering the limit, the government) raised the population estimate to
10,000-13,000, he said. The government and the hunters have been playing
up the population and playing down the amount of poaching (to justify
continued over-hunting)
