Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 01
(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 01) This year, 2013, was the first time in over 33 years of living at Sleepy Hollow Lake that we have been able to observe, photograph, and identify a Canada anemone. Canada anemones are relatively rare in eastern New York, but are common in the mid-western states. However, their range extends extends from coast to coast and north through Canada.

(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 01a) This is a closer look at the Canada anemone flower and leaves. The literature says that they can grow from one to two feet tall, but these were only about 6-8 inches tall. The Canada anemone flowers are about one inch across and bloom from May to July. They are members of the Buttercup (Ranunculaceae) family. The leaves of the Canada anemone are deeply divided into 3 to 5 lobes (3 is most common) and coarsely toothed. A single whorl of leaves is about 5 inches in diameter, and sits on the upper part of the stem.

(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 02) This is another Canada anemone. Each flower has five white petals, and many yellow tipped stamens that turn brown with age.

(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 03) This is a small patch of Canada anemones that we saw along the edge of the wooded roadway. Amandagarden.com says, "This is a great plant to have around if you have insect problems, it draws beneficial insects to your garden. Beneficial insects  such as minute plant bug, dance flies and chalcid wasps. These insects will help rid your garden of psyllids, thrips, mites, aphids, whiteflies, and small caterpillars.

(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 03a) While posting these photos of the Canada anemones, we noticed a second tier of leaves beginning to develop in the center of the leaf in the middle of the photo. We didn't see anything about this in the literature.

(Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) - 04a) In this bee's eye view of a Canada anemone, we can clearly see most of the 5 petals and the many yellow tipped stamens, and the underlying greenish center of the flower.
