Animal Rights Group Demands Federal Action Against Vanderbilt Nashville, TN Metro Networks -- Radio News 10/18/07 Story is for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning (Nashville, TN) -- An animal rights advocacy group calls Vanderbilt
University one of the worst Animal Rights Act violators in the country.
Stop Animal Exploitation Now President Michael Budkie says the school
has a long history of federal violations. His organization is asking the
U.S. Department of Agriculture to fine Vanderbilt 30-thousand-dollars
for 12 infractions listed on the school's last inspection report. That's
the maximum allowable fine under federal guidelines. Vanderbilt
University Medical Center spokesman John Howser says the school is
currently in compliance with all USDA regulations. He adds that the
Vanderbilt devotes significant resources to strict oversight of its
animal research program. Howser declined comment on specific allegations raised by SAEN,
including claims that a rabbit was killed in January of 2007 by being
run through a cage washer and that in May three cotton rats died due to
improper handling.
