You must permanently terminate the previously suspended rat experiment in which LSU staff refused to follow humane endpoints, and intentionally performed surgeries on weekends to avoid veterinary supervision. Heinous behavior like this must not be tolerated.

Group Questions Animal Experimentation

November 16, 2018

An Animal Rights Group is calling on the LSU system to take action. This push stems from an experiment at LSU Health Shreveport. Fox 44's Amber Smith joins us now to explain what the group "Stop Animal Exploitation NOW" asked for in a letter sent to F. King Alexander this week.

The Animal care and use committee voted to suspend an experiment at LSU Health Shreveport back in January 2018. According to internal reports, the project was suspended for a number of violations including that the experiments were being performed on Fridays with post-op on weekends without veterinary supervision, animals were being used for the same experiment twice and animal endpoints were not being adhered to.

After corrective action, the suspension was lifted. In a letter to F. King Alexander, "Stop Animal Exploitation NOW" executive director said "The severity of compliance issues and lack of adequate supervision by the ACIC clearly indicate that major systemic issues exist. in the presence of this project, I cannot imagine that other LSU projects are fully compliant."

The group is calling for the LSU system to launch an independent investigation into the entire animal experimentation program.
