University of Pennsylvania targeted for Sunday demonstration; Labs lead U.S. in violations of federal animal welfare act

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania which has violated federal Animal Welfare Act law more times than any other university in the country is the target of animal protection activists here.

A demonstration, part of national "Primate Liberation Week" protests this next week, will be held SUNDAY, Oct. 14, from 1-3 p.m. at 34th & Walnut, according to ROAR (Reach Out for Animal Rights).

Federal (USDA) inspection reports cite the university research labs for 77 Animal Welfare Act violations in the areas of veterinary care, environmental enhancement for primates, unqualified personnel, and institutional animal care and use committees, according to SAEN, a national research watchdog non-profit based in Ohio.
