Campaigns Contact needed - Greenburgh 'deer committee' A few months ago the Town of Greenburgh established a 'deer committee' to
address the 'problem' of deer in Greenburgh. This is the second time such a committee was formed in Greenburgh; the
first was a few years ago, which fell apart after several meetings. We have received a letter from one of the members of this committee; This is the second member who has contacted us. Both members sought the intervention of our group. Here is a portion of
the most recent letter we received: "I serve on this committee and there are about 25 people, of which 5 of
us are against killing the deer. The problem is they want a quick solution.
The organizer, head of the committee has gotten the wild flower society,
Audubon society, the garden society all on his side. The head of the
committee Jacques Padawer claims that the committee hasn't made any
decisions, but it is so clear what the outcome is. He gives us these reports to do where we research a topic and report back
to the group. So every time someone had to report, I researched things to rebut their
findings against the deer. I was shot down at all times. No matter what you
say to this man, he has a one track mind. I am starting to gather some local
friends and deer lovers to attend our next meeting. The questionnaire he
sent out was clearly BIAS and persuasive. I can go on and on. There is another women who is the co-chair, she was mad a Jacques for not
gathering the information sooner so they could start the killing this fall!
(and I thought the committee did not reach a decision yet!) All she cares
about are her dam flowers and I volunteered to buy her the deer deterrent
that I use and even spray it, she declined." The current deer committee has at its helm an avowed hunter, though it
would appear the head of such a committee should be neutral; the committee
thus far has generated a number of bad articles in the press, two 'letters
to the editor' in which committee members bashed each other and animal
rights activists as well. When the committee was formed, a questionnaire was distributed to the
public which asked recipients about their perceptions of the deer; it seemed
to be clearly designed to 'lead' the reader in the direction of destroying
the deer. (copy upon request). The author of the above letter, as well as the previous person who
contacted us, states Greenburgh has been provided a full education on the
true ideology of lyme disease, humane mgmt - even recommendations for
educating drivers. Please write polite but strong letters to Paul Feiner, with a cc to the
Chief of Police, expressing our concern that NON-LETHAL METHODS be employed
for any 'deer control' effort. It is possible they intent to stay this
course anyway; but it appears they should hear from the AR community at this
point. EMAIL: Paul Feiner, Town Supervisor:
