NEW YORK, NY On December 27, 2001 members of ANIMAL
DEFENDERS OF WESTCHESTER (ADOW) will demonstrate in front of CBS
Headquarters at 51 West 52nd street, from 1 - 2:30 p.m., to protest an
upcoming segment of "48 Hours" entitled DYING TO BE A HERO, which
glorifies rodeos.
We are requesting that "48 Hours" do concise
investigative journalism on this topic to show ALL aspects of rodeo -
electric prods and spurs used on horses and bulls, the tight flank strap
that makes domesticated animals appear 'wild' and the fact that unwilling
animal victims die in rodeos: Recently the audience at a Wyoming rodeo was
told a dead calf was "being taken to the hospital" when he was killed
during an event. Several counties have already banned rodeos and the
brutal implements associated with them.
Kiley Blackman, organizer of this event, said "Rodeo
is like slavery, part of the past that we should want to put behind us. It
celebrates the pathetic side of the 'wild west' when bored men had nothing
to do but abuse their animals in the evening. It should be illegal to
force animals to suffer in these enactments."
