NEW YORK CITY, NY DECEMBER 30, 2002 Members of Animal
Defenders of Westchester will hold a demonstration on Monday, December 30,
outside NBC studios at 50 west 49th street, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., to
protest the addition of bull-riding coverage to NBC's programming.
We want to know why NBC is so eager to exploit this
cruel relic of the past, in which normally-peaceful animals are made to
'buck' by means of a strap which is tightly cinched near their genitals;
shamefully, the announcer tells the viewing audience the animals are
"trained to buck." More shamefully, NBC has now added a salsa commercial
featuring calf-roping, where small terrified animals are yanked off their
feet and slammed to the ground by someone pretending to be manly; these poor
animals frequently have their bones broken as a result.
Is it merely that NBC will do just about anything for a
buck?
Kiley Blackman, organizer of this event, said, "I don't
know why the public thinks these events prove bravery, when in fact they
only prove bullies win. NBC has promised me they have a "commitment to
compassion," and we expect them to put their money where their mouth is."
