Press Release STOP 'N SHOP DISGRACE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Yonkers, NY On Saturday, June 14, 2003 members of Animal Defenders of
Westchester (ADOW) will conduct a demonstration outside Cross County
Shopping Center, Vredenberg Ave entrance in Yonkers, from 2 - 4 p.m., to
protest the appearance of baby elephant rides and a petting zoo at Stop 'N
Shop Superstores in Cross County Shopping Center. Elephants have very strong family attachments and love their babies just
as humans do; mother elephants have to be beaten, starved and drugged to
remove their babies from them. Petting zoo animals are dragged around the
state in deplorable conditions till they are no longer cute, at which point
they go to the slaughterhouse. Cummerford Zoo, supplier of this event, has numerous violations and was
the supplier to Van Cortlandt Manor's "Animals And Acrobats" event till
activists educated them on Cummerford's filthy operation. Susequently VCM terminated its relationship with Cummerford, and with all
elephant/camel rides as well. Furthermore, Stop 'N Shop is deliberately misleading the public by
stating this event has 'no relationship to Stop 'N Shop' but rather is being
run by Cross County Shopping Center; a phone call to the Center's Executive
office brought a strong denial, and charges of duplicity against Stop 'N
Shop. Kiley Blackman, organizer of this event, said "I can't imagine why Stop
'N Shop would want to ruin their good name by being related to animal
cruelty and lying to the public aobut their involvement as well. I strongly
urge them to discontinue this sad, unnecessary activity that only casts them
in a bad light." * Stop 'N Shop discontinued further such events after activist outreach
