YONKERS, NY On Saturday, July 12, 2003 members of
ANIMAL DEFENDERS OF WESTCHESTER (ADOW) will conduct a demonstration
outside Petco at 2350 Central Avenue in Yonkers, from 2:30 - 4:00 pm,
to protest their negligent and appalling conditions for animals.
A simultaneous demo will be held at Petco in Glen Cove, L.I., where
animals died recently during an air conditioner outage in that
store; in addition, at least 10 nationwide demos against Petco
are planned.
Fact: The majority of animals sold in Petco come from
large deplorable breeding mills. Animals are crammed into
filthy, unventilated cages; they are shipped to Petco often
unweaned, and so sick from transport they often die shortly after
being placed on the shelves, or in the shipping box: an insider reports a
box of animals was delivered to Petco and left ignored and unopened
for a week. He also asserts the Glen Cove tragedy was completely
avoidable.
Fact: Petco employess themselves have contacted Peta,
with complaints ranging from being told to put sick
animals in the freezer to die, to animals being left in their
enclosures for days at a time without food and water
Fact: Conditions are so bad, lawsuits have been filed
by four venues, including San Francisco, demanding that Petco
stop selling live animals. Pet shop trade magazines have blasted
Petco on their front pages.
Kiley Blackman, organizer of this event, said "Though
we prefer people to patronize shops that don't sell any live
animals, please at least make an effort to purchase pet-related items
anywhere but Petco, which has horrifying disregard for animals in
their care."
