Bridgeport, Ct Saturday, August 9 On Saturday, August
9 Animal Defenders of Westchester will join Puppy Mill Fighters, Peta and
other local animal protection groups, for a demonstration outside Shoreline
Star Dog Track in Bridgeport to protest the cruel and antiquated 'sport' of
dog racing.
Starving, beating and confinement are typical training
tools used on 'Man's best friend' in his racing life span. Dogs are muzzled
and kept in cages almost 22 hours a day. Open wounds are left untreated;
veterinary care is almost non-existent as it would cut into profits.
Approx. 20,000 dogs are killed yearly when they no longer make a profit.
On 5/23/02 the NY Times reported on a man who admitted killing thousands of
greyhounds for $10 each - "The dogs were not unhealthy, just slow." The
industry hides behind a ludicrous 'adoption program' - which is an outgrowth
of a problem THEY CREATED!
According to the New Haven Register, the Golden Hills
Tribe is poised to start a casino in Bridgeport, which would doom Shoreline
Star. Residents overwhelmingly want this casino, and the City Council wants
to negotiate with the Golden Hills Tribe - what is causing the delay?
Kiley Blackman, organizer of this event, said "It is
shocking that such low grade trash still exists in this day and age - these
are our DOGS, for God's sake, our faithful companions! Whenever animals are
put in betting situations, the animals always lose - always.
Connecticut needs to give serious thought to getting
rid of these dog tracks, which are a blight on the good name of the New
England area."
