Press Release HUNTERS ON THE RUN IN WESTCHESTER FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Del Seligman, Esq Westchester, NY Oct. 21, 2004 Animal Defenders of Westchester
(ADOW) is pleased to announce the filing of a NOTICE OF DANGEROUS CONDITION
regarding hunting in Westchester County, as well possible hunting in the
Town of Greenburgh. According to a NY Post article, the DEC is offering hunters added time
and opportunities to hunt on watershed land that at one time was closed by
the events of 9/11 (“More chances for hunters” Oct. 17) This not only poses
a security risk for obvious reasons; in addition, the NOTICE raises county
liability due to the increased risk of hunter-related accidents. This NOTICE states in part: “The County of Westchester, its duly retained
contractor(s)...have made known their intent to permit bow/firearm hunting
within its confines, which pose dangers such as impaling and shooting to the
public; in addition, emotional and psychological distress from witnessing
said actions; other risks include the possibility of increased deer/car
collisions resulting from frightened deer running into the roadway...” This legal notice gives effected person/s the right to sue the County of
Westchester in the event of casualty, or even being the unfortunate
recipient of seeing the result of hunting - as in the case of a resident
who, to his alarm, found a dead doe with an arrow still in her, in his yard.
Hunter efficacy is notoriously inaccurate. Kiley Blackman, ADOW
spokesperson said, “Hunter training and requirements are minimal, and
accidents are plentiful

Indeed, a recent meeting of the Greenburgh ‘deer committee’ was addressed
by a hunter with Tourette’s Syndrome - an illness characterized by twitches
and spasms so violent sufferers report being unable to use a computer!
Lawsuits might negatively effect property taxes - and our property taxes
just went up 21%! Why is Westchester jeopardizing our safety and property
taxes?”
