INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS

Just two weeks ago we asked you to write to Boulder County, Colorado District Attorney Stan Garnett and ask that he take violent and illegal wildlife killings more seriously, and thousands of you responded.

One of the incidents involved 20 year old Jace Robert Griffiths, who brutally bludgeoned a raccoon to death so he "could take its hide." When police officers arrived, they found a baseball bat covered in blood on the front porch of the house, along with a raccoon's skin covered in salt. Although DA Garnett originally filed felony aggravated animal cruelty charges against Griffiths, he ultimately dropped them and wrote the incident off as legal "hunting."

Fortunately, the Boulder City Attorney's Office agrees on the legal importance of these heinous and violent acts. As a result, they filed three municipal charges against Griffiths: subjecting animals to unnecessary suffering, prohibited killing of wild animals, and littering. At a court hearing this week, Griffiths pled guilty to the charges and was given a deferred sentence. In exchange, he is required to see a licensed psychologist who will screen him for "predictors of violence," and he must follow up with any recommended treatment.

As a condition of his sentence, he must also attend a "decision making workshop," and commit no further acts of violence or intimidation.

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
