Last April on Capitol Hill, Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), working with ADI, introduced HR 4525, the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA), into the 113th Congress. The Bill will end the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses in the US.

The issue of animal cruelty and suffering is, of course, a nonpartisan issue and the original cosponsors of HR 4525 with Rep Moran are: Rep Walter Jones (R-NC), Rep Hank Johnson (D-GA), Rep Judy Chu (D-CA), Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep Tony Cardenas (D-CA).

Launching the new bill Rep Jim Moran said, "From video and photographic evidence, it’s clear that traveling circuses aren’t providing the proper living conditions for exotic animals. This legislation is intended to target the most egregious situations involving exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses. The mounting evidence of inhumane treatment and the growing public concern for these animals demands that we reconsider what are appropriate living conditions for these intelligent, social creatures.”

The US has now joined the 30 countries around the world that are either discussing a wild animal ban – such as the UK, Brazil, Mexico and others – or have already passed a ban.

Countries that have passed national legislation already include Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Greece, India, Panama and Singapore, see the full list here

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
